InDesign Accessibility: Split Tables Across Pages Not Tagged Correctly

We are facing an issue with accessibility tagging in InDesign while exporting to a tagged PDF.

The table is designed across a two-page spread//split (full-width layout). However, after exporting the file as a tagged PDF, the table structure is recognized only on the first page. The content on the second page is not identified as part of the same table in the PDF tags.

Observation:

  • First page table is tagged correctly

  • Second page table content is not included in the table structure

  • Reading order and tagging break across pages

Expected behavior:
The table should be recognized as a single structure across both pages in the tagged PDF.

Questions:

  • Is this a known limitation in InDesign?
  • Is there any workaround to maintain a continuous table structure across pages in tagged PDF?
  • Are there any recommended best practices for handling full-spread tables for accessibility?

Any guidance or confirmation from Adobe team would be helpful.

Thanks in advance.

I’ve download your example and exported it as a tagged pdf 1.7, using your Articles.

It exports as expected, the complete table tagged including the stupid multiple THeads and TBodies (which is wrong and a InDesign fault, there should be only one THead and one TBody)

So I see nothing strange about this.

I do see in your screenshot that you use PDFix, maybe you leveled it up (using the fixes in PDFix)?

Anyway, it is not InDesign here doing this as I could test you document (see screenshot)

@Abhishek Rao Your screenshot makes no sense, this is not standard InDesign export behaviour…

Hi, can you share a screenshot of our export settings, a way to look at our pdf and the exact versions of your software and OS.

    Hi @viswanathan_1535,

Thanks for reaching out and sorry for the experience you're facing here. I tried to reproduce this on my end using Adobe InDesign 21.3 on Windows 11, and I did not observe the same behavior. The table content spanning across pages was tagged under the same table structure in Acrobat.

Could you please confirm the exact version of InDesign and your OS details? Also, let me know if this is happening with a specific file or across all files.

It would help if you could try creating a new InDesign document, add a table that flows to the next page, export it as a tagged PDF, and then check the tags in Acrobat to see if the issue persists there as well.

If this seems to be file-specific, you can share the file with me via DM after packaging it using File > Package. If the file is confidential, you can upload it to any publicly available cloud platform and share the link. I’ll also keep this thread open so our esteemed experts can take a look and share any additional workflow guidance if needed.

    Looking forward to your update.

    Hi @Abhishek Rao,

Thank you for checking this on your end.

I am also using Adobe InDesign 21.3 on Windows 11, and I am still experiencing the same issue.

This behavior is occurring consistently in my file. I have attached the InDesign package (Table Folder..zip) for your reference so you can review the exact setup and structure.

Please let me know if you need any additional details.

    Thanks.

Title: InDesign Tagged PDF – Table spanning across pages not fully tagged

We are facing an issue with accessibility tagging in InDesign while exporting to a tagged PDF.

The table is designed across a two-page spread (full-width layout).

    Understanding:
It appears that InDesign processes accessibility tagging at the page level, and tables spanning multiple pages are not treated as a single continuous table.

    Expected behavior:
The table should be recognized as a single structure across both pages in the tagged PDF.

Any guidance or confirmation from Adobe team would be helpful.

    Thanks in advance.
