Question

InDesign automatically generating alt-text for an image?

Hi, had a bit of an odd one lately, a document I was working on seemed to auto-generate alt-text for one of the images in the publication, which then showed up on a hover-over in Acrobat after output, but none of the other images within the document. I checked the image file for any sort of existing tagging or metadata, but couldn't identify anything. Any ideas why this would happen? None of the other images within the file were tagged. Thanks

Hi H_Bert_1

Thank you for reaching out. Would you mind telling us the version of InDesign installed on your machine and the details of your operating system? Please also confirm if the issue is happening with the new file or the old file.

If the issue occurs with a specific image, could you please try using the same image in a new file and see if the problem persists?

If it's an old file, please try exporting it as IDML, opening the IDML file, and resaving it as a new INDD file. Then, test the issue with the new INDD file.

We will be happy to assist you further.

Thanks,

Harshika

It's in a new file, IDD 2026, but that would have originated from a template that's had a bit of a history. I can't see any trace of an alt text or tag in the original image file. I deleted the info in object export options in IDD but now I can't seem to replicate the problem, so I'm mystified. It does appear that AI generated it, as the Alt-Text comes with the caveat 'AI-generated content may be incorrect'. As if it's chosen to tag this one image, and had a stab at it, without being specfically asked to.

Thanks for confirming @H_Bert_1,

Could you please share a link to the problematic file after uploading it to a file-sharing service, so we can review it with the team?

Looking forward to hearing from you.
