InDesign CC Crashes Upon Copy and Paste Content

I'm part of a small creative team that is putting together a branding guidelines document for a client. My creative director purchased a template (INDT file extension) for us to use as a starting point since we were on a time crunch, but I have run into some issues with this.

While I was able to open the template file and change out the fonts and edit the text in the text boxes, every time I tried to copy and paste a text box, the program would crash. A few things to mention, my company is exclusively virtual so I do work from home, and my current operating system is as follows:

Model: iMac21,1, BootROM 7459.141.1, proc 8:4:4 processors, 16 GB, SMC
Graphics: Apple M1, Apple M1, Built-In
Display: iMac, Retina 4.5K (4480 x 2520), Main, MirrorOff, Online
Display: DELL P1914S, 1280 x 1024 (SXGA - Super eXtended Graphics Array), MirrorOff, Online
Memory Module: LPDDR4
AirPort: Wi-Fi, wl0: Mar 23 2022 19:44:05 version 18.60.27.0.7.8.129 FWID 01-62606619
Bluetooth: Version (null), 0 services, 0 devices, 0 incoming serial ports
Network Service: Wi-Fi, AirPort, en1

I started out using the most recent version of InDesign 2022 (17.4), but tried uninstalling and reinstalling the same version, but still kept getting crashes. At some point, InDesign would crash upon startup, but deleting the recovery files from the cache at least let me open the program and the file again. So I tried uninstalling Version 17.4 and rolled back to the last 2021 version of InDesign, (16.4.3).

Upon opening a fresh file using the template my director gave me, I made some edits to the text, changed a few of the fonts... and then I tried copying and pasting something. Again, I got another crash. So I did a few tests with some other InDesign files I had (one was my resume and another was a final version of another InDesign project for an old client) and copying and pasting worked fine there, no crashes. I did a third test and opened up the template file again and tried to copy and paste without making any other edits first... and it crashed. So I am pretty sure that it's something to do with the template file that's causing the issue.

Below is also the beginning parts of the last crash report, and I have a Google doc with the full report on hand if that might be useful that I can put in the replies if anyone's interested. That said, I'm not really sure where to go from here – my creative director has been very understanding about this whole mess, but if anyone has any thoughts as to a potential fix/solution or even just an explanation as to what's causing the issue, I would appreciate the input.

(My current theory is that it might just be an M1 Mac thing, which would suck if there's no solution to that, but at least it only seems to be affecting template files - or this specific template at any rate - and files created from a template save, not other indesign files.)

My manager and I have this same issue, but our computers are Windows operationg system.

I have no solutions, but thought i'd comment to let you know its not exclusive to Mac.

Yeah, my creative director had the same issue when he tried it, and he also uses Windows. After some testing with older files and creating new documents from scratch, the issue did indeed seem to be with the file itself. We're still not sure if all template files have that problem with InDesign CC, but we were at least able to get the branding document finished by the deadline even with the delays.

When I've had this issue in the past, I've created whole new documents with new styles and everything, but as soon as I copy and paste text with a style, the document lags and crashes. It also crashes anytime I have Acrobat open simultaneously while saving the IND doc.

That's good you were able to finish before your deadline! I almost missed mine this afternoon because the crashes have been a major time suck to my work.

I am begining to look into alternatives because its just a constant frustration.

Fingers crossed you remain crash-free!
