InDesign CC stalls when my connected laptop goes to sleep

Hello CC folks. I work in InDesign CC on my iMac. I am working on InDesign files and linked graphics stored locally on my iMac's hard drive exclusively. While I have a laptop that is connected via wireless sharing (to access non-CC stuff), it sits closed and sleeping much of the day. I noticed InDesign was stalling and/or crashing on me frequently (the beachball) and soon realized it would happen whenever I closed the laptop or, if open, when the screensaver engaged.

I don't understand why my laptop sleeping on my shared network would cause InDesign to stall when I'm not accessing the laptop for anything related to InDesign work. The only solution I have is to turn off the laptop completely when I'm working in InDesign, but this isn't an acceptable solution since I work all day in InDesign and need to switch over to my laptop for other things on and off throughout the day.

Anyone else had this issue and discovered a solution?

I should have used the expression "protocol". Which one: SMB or AFB ? What happens if you switch to the other protocol?

I was using AFB but I just checked SMB as well. (It appears to allow me to have both checked simultaneously.)  I performed a few tests of the problem and it appears to be resolved. Thank you so much!

    OS Sierra 10.12.6

I'm accessing the laptop through my personal home wireless network.
