InDesign CC2015 suddenly sluggish and ctrl/tools disappeared

Hi, I'm on a rolling online Adobe Creative Cloud payment contract ... I'm using InDesign CC2015 on macOS Sierra 10.12.6, all has been fine for a couple of years until today ... all of a sudden, now when I open an existing document, my tools and controls are missing, and I get the spinning wheel of death even if I try to move a text box 1mm! Have quit and re-started, have run Disk Utility, have searched various online threads but come up with nothing relevant. Can anyone shed any light? Many thanks!

Hi Bill,

Just wanted to thank you again for your advice. Unfortunately it hasn't worked for me ... I followed your instructions down to the tee but no change at all, the program is still wheel-spinning and sluggish, and the control and tool windows don't show up upon start up. Most frustrating! Thanks again!

I'm sorry that did not work out for you. It sounds to me like you may need to uninstall InDesign using the Creative Cloud Desktop app and then reinstall using that same app. Since you have a Creative Cloud Account you can actually update to CC 2017 if you wish using the app. In either case I would also delete the preferences once again before launching whichever version you choose to reinstall.

Have you tried trashing your InDesign preferences?

To do so:

With InDesign closed Launch a Finder Window in column view and click on your home folder. With the Option Key pressed choose Library from the Finder Go Menu. Within the Library folder find the folder called Preferences and within it find the following two files and delete them: “Adobe InDesign” and “com.adobe.InDesign.plist”. When InDesign is next launched it will create new preference files and the program will be restored to its defaults.

After you’ve reset up the program (make sure that no document window is open) to your liking, it is a really good idea to create copies of your personalized “mint” preference files (make sure that you quit the program before copying them—that finalizes your customization) and use them in the future to replace any corrupt versions you may need to delete.

Hi Bill, thanks so much for your informative and speedy response! I am afraid to say that I am at a loss re. finding the home folder from the finder window, so doomed from square one. I've attached a screenshot of what I get. Sorry if I'm being beyond dumb at the first hurdle ...

Actually, if you go under the Finder Go Menu with the option pressed and choose Library a window will pop up with Library selected and then you can follow the rest of the path I provided to find and delete your preferences.
