InDesign Cmd Shift Period Zoom In Shortcut Not Working on Mac After Update

Since the last Adobe InDesign update, my zoom shortcut (cmd + Shift + .) no longer works, while the zoom shortcut does. This is wasting my design time. Could someone please help me solve this problem? I'm still a beginner with the Adobe suite and I've tried to solve it myself by searching online and on forums, but I haven't been able to. Thank you for your help.

Cmd + Shift + . [period] is a shortcut for increasing type size.
Standard zoom in most/many programs is Cmd + = [equal sign]; Zoom out is Cmd + - [hyphen]; and reset size/fit in window is Cmd + 0 [zero].

Tip: it’s easier if you think of the shortcuts as Cmd Plus (zoom in) and Cmd Minus (zoom out)--although you do NOT hold down the Shift key. Perhaps that’s where the confusion came in.

No, the standard in most applications is Cmd+(+) för zoom in and Cmd+(-) for zoom out. In the Adobe Suite Z is the shortcut för the Zoom tool. But the question here was why the shortcut for zoom in/out doesn’t work as it used to. Normally you press Cmd first, then Spacebar for the zoom tool to show zoom in, add Opt/Alt for Zoom out. Now this doesn’t work anymore and you have to press Spacebar first, then Cmd, which is very annoying. I really hope they fix this soon. The command has been working since version 1.0 and I don’t understand why they changed it.

That’s what I said, except one is not holding the shift key so technically, it is the hyphen and equal sign.

Hi @Alex_audureau,

Thanks for reaching out. I understand how disruptive it can be when a commonly used shortcut suddenly stops working.

Could you please confirm which exact InDesign version you updated to when this issue started, along with your current macOS version? Also, since Cmd + Shift + . is not a default Zoom In shortcut in InDesign, it appears this mahat wy have been a custom shortcut tas set up earlier, so please let me know if you had customized it before.

In the meantime, please go to Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts in InDesign, set the Product Area to View Menu, select Zoom In, and check which shortcut is currently assigned. If needed, you can reassign your preferred shortcut there, save it, and test if it works as expected.

Please try this and let me know how it goes.

Pleas see my above answer to Dave for an details. I’m on MacOS 26, InDesign 2026. Please fix this. Standard on Mac since 1.0 has been Cmd+Spacebar for zoom tool, now you have to press Spacebar first, then Cmd, which is incredibly annoying.

Thanks for sharing those additional details and sorry to hear about the experience.

I tested this behavior on InDesign 19.5.5, 20.5.4, and 21.4.1 on my end, and the behavior was consistent across all three versions. Pressing Command first and then Spacebar invoked Spotlight, whereas pressing Spacebar first changed the cursor to the Hand Tool, and then pressing Command switched it to the Zoom Tool.

To help us determine whether this is actually a behavioral change in your environment, could you please install an older version of InDesign (2025) alongside InDesign 2026 using the Creative Cloud Desktop app? You can keep one version of InDesign 2026 and one version of InDesign 2025 installed at the same time. Then, please compare the shortcut behavior between the two versions.

If you do observe a difference, could you also share a short screen recording showing the behavior in both versions? That will help us investigate whether this is a regression specific to your setup or something that has changed more broadly.
