Indesign crashes when attempting to use Flex Layout

I was attempting to do some basic tasks with Flex Layout in InDesign PC. After about a half-dozen things were tried InDesign completely froze, the process had to be stopped and the program re-launched. This is 100% repeatable behavior, whether with an existing file open or with a new file open. Everything else with ID is fine, just whenever I try to use Flex.

I can work around this by never using it (I never did before), but since there’s a risk of document corruption when I force-close I.D. I’m wondering what’s going on.

If it's freezing every time you use Flex Layout and you can reproduce it consistently with both new and existing documents, it definitely sounds like something worth investigating rather than a one-off issue. It would be interesting to know if others are seeing the same behavior with the current version of InDesign or if it's related to a specific update. A consistently reproducible case like this should make it easier to identify the root cause.

@PeterD-NJ I am extremely sorry to know that you have faced issues while using Flex layout recently.Could you please provide us the document & the workflow you are trying to do.

The document is proprietary, but the workflow was extremely simple. Four stop signs that I wanted to equally space within a square. This is the kind of thing I do with distribute and align tools and for a simple task like that it serves me well. I just wanted to see if Flex could do it more easily. After the 8th or 9th crash recovery I copied the stop sign graphics to a new document and experienced the same issue.

@PeterD-NJ  Thank you for telling about the workflow, may i know what format of images / signs you are using, is it svg/png etc & if possible can you tell us the justification & alignment you were using in Flex panel, this information might help us to drill down our investigation since we dont have the document.

Windows 11, InDesign 21.3 x64, Ryzen 7 CPU, 128 GB of RAM, two 2TB nVME drives, Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 with 4GB. No third party plug-ins installed. I always update the OS and apps as soon as updates are announced, so consider it the latest and greatest.

I guess I should just close the case since I’m not going through massive troubleshooting steps for a feature I’ve never used before and probably never will again. While it could be helpful in certain projects, that juice ain’t worth the squeeze. I was more curious if I was the only person reporting this issue. I have the system running exactly as I need it to run, and the 700 Mb InDesign project that is my life’s work is open 24/7 for whenever inspiration hits for changes or additions.

Fair enough. If Flex Layout is not useful to you, I can understand not wanting to spend a lot of time troubleshooting it.

That said, a consistently repeatable freeze may not necessarily be isolated to Flex Layout. Flex could simply be the straw that breaks the camel’s back, exposing a preference, GPU, installation or system-level issue that has not yet become noticeable in other parts of InDesign.

I would be particularly cautious with a 700 MB document that remains open continuously. Even when InDesign appears stable, keeping a large and important file open indefinitely increases the consequences of a crash, power interruption or damaged recovery data. Regular incremental backups and occasional save-as copies would be advisable.

You may also be the first person reporting this exact combination of circumstances. That does not mean the issue is unique to your computer, but Adobe would need the precise steps that reproduce the freeze before determining whether it is a wider bug.

I have several projects where the InDesign file gathers over 300mb of a file.

I have created a script that Auto Backups (I’ve since improved since last time).
And it also turns InDesign to Typical Display on opening these types of large documents.

I’ve experienced constant Indesign crashes with very large files, so I’ve created my own workflow to save files every 5 minutes in a 3 file backup rotating system, and reducing CPU/GPU load with Display Performance.

    Might help.

After some horrendous data-loss crashes two years ago I got into the habit of CTRL+S every couple of changes now, and in heavy editing sessions, save-as to document-1 then save as again to document.indd.

I’m a one-person shop, and frankly taking what would amount to potentially days or even weeks if things fall apart means loss of productivity and breaking my research and train of thought. Yes, Flex would be a wonderful tool on occasion, but align+distribute will have to suffice, I suspect.

had been experiencing crashes this morning when I attempted to copy or cut text. Again, 100% repeatable and restarting didn’t help. I trashed my prefs and at least that isn’t happening anymore.

But something odd I found too. When I saved as an IDML last week, the main .indd file was perfectly fine, but opening the .idml yielded over 300 instances of overset text. Needless to say, I gave up on that too.

I haven't run into this personally, but if it's 100% reproducible only when using Flex Layout, it sounds more like a bug than a problem with your document.

A couple of things I'd try are launching InDesign with plug-ins disabled, testing in a brand-new user account, and making sure you're on the latest version (or rolling back if the issue started after an update). If it happens with a brand-new blank document as well, that points even more toward the feature itself rather than file corruption.

Out of curiosity, which version of InDesign are you using, and what operating system are you on?

Basically what I’ve already asked, yes?

Hi Eugene, I think that user is an AI bot (judging by its posts so far).

Sounds like a Flex Layout bug, especially since it happens in both new and existing files. Try updating InDesign and resetting preferences, then test again with plugins disabled. If it still freezes, report the exact steps to Adobe so they can reproduce it. For now, avoiding Flex Layout is probably safest.

    Hello

Sounds frustrating, I’ve never used the Flex tool, tried it on a random colours of squares before and there was no rhye or reason how they reflowed and I gave up on it, not something I’d use anyway… but besides the point.

Can you please provide the following system details:

    • Exact InDesign version, including the full build number from Help > About InDesign

    • Windows version and build

    • Computer make/model, processor, RAM and graphics card

    • Whether any third-party InDesign plug-ins are installed

Since the problem is fully repeatable in both existing and new documents, try the following tests in order:

    1. Reset the InDesign preferences

Close InDesign, then relaunch it while holding:

    Ctrl + Alt + Shift

Confirm that you want to delete the preference files when prompted.

You can also reset them manually by renaming the InDesign preferences and cache folders, which allows you to restore them later if necessary.

    1. Test Windows Safe Mode

Restart Windows in Safe Mode and test Flex Layout again. This can help determine whether antivirus software, VPN/security tools, background utilities, graphics software or another third-party process is interfering with InDesign.

Restart Windows normally after completing the test.

    1. Disable third-party plug-ins

Temporarily remove or disable any non-Adobe InDesign plug-ins and test again.

    1. Rule out security and background software

Temporarily test with the VPN disconnected and, where permitted, antivirus or endpoint-security software disabled. Also close any clipboard managers, font-management tools, screen-recording utilities and other background applications.

    1. Check GPU-related settings

    Try disabling GPU Performance under:

Edit > Preferences > GPU Performance

Then restart InDesign and repeat the test.

    1. Reinstall InDesign

Uninstall InDesign through the Creative Cloud desktop application, restart the computer, and reinstall it.

As a final step, use the Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool to remove the InDesign installation and related components before reinstalling. This should generally be reserved for cases where a normal reinstall does not resolve the problem.

Since the issue is consistently reproducible, it would also be useful to confirm the exact sequence of actions that causes the freeze. A short screen recording may help Adobe reproduce it.

Force-closing InDesign does carry some risk, so test using a disposable document and keep backups of any affected files.
