Question

InDesign crashes when changing any content, or typing in the box to change page size

Hello,

This is the second time this has happened to me in the past month so I'm getting pretty frustrated.

Essentially, it goes like this:

  1. Load a document, which goes just fine.
  2. Move a text box.
  3. Crash.

Or, it goes like this:

  1. Load a document, no issues.
  2. File > document setup, intending to change the page size project-wide.
  3. Click the box to type in new page size.
  4. Type anything.
  5. Crash.

Or, in an even more fun event, it goes like this:

  1. Load a document, no issues.
  2. File > document setup.
  3. Try using the up/down arrows instead of typing because it feels like text must be the issue.
  4. Crash.

In any of those cases, when I try to open up that document again, the application notifies me that they're likely corrupted. If I try to open them anyway via that dialog, they won't open. If I open them again via File > Open, then they open like normal.

I'm running 15.1.1 on MacOS Catalina 10.15.6. I've rebooted my computer, uninstalled/reinstalled InDesign. I've cleared my preferences. Nothing.

I'm having a very similar issue with a document. Created weeks ago with a placed Word document, edited layout etc etc. Not trying to make final text changed and any time i press the >delete< button, it crashes. I can't make even the tiniest edit.

Is there a solution? Indesign is up to date at 19.5 and Mac is on Sonoma 14.6.1

Hello @Samantha37293283b2aj

I’m sorry to hear that you’re experiencing crashes when trying to edit your document. I understand how frustrating this must be, especially when you're close to finalizing your work.

To help us dig deeper into this issue, could you please let us know if the crash occurs with only this specific document or if it happens with others as well? Additionally, could you confirm if the issue persists after you try editing the document in a new user account on your Mac?

In the meantime, please try resetting the InDesign preferences. I understand your concern about this potentially affecting your workflow, so here’s a guide to safely back up your current settings before resetting: How to reset InDesign preferences.

Let us know if this helps or if the issue continues. We're here to support you!

Thank you,
Abhishek Rao

The issue only happens with this one document. Others are fine. I ended up using InDesign 18.5.2 and it hasnt crashed because I need to send the document ASAP. I will try the other solutions later and let you know.

Did you ever solve this problem? The same thing is happening to me---I'm trying to change the page size using File-->document setup  or File-->adjust layout, they both crash

Hello @NatureCulture,

I'm sorry to hear you're experiencing this issue with InDesign. To help you better, could you please share the version of InDesign you're using and your operating system details?

In the meantime, try resetting your InDesign preferences by holding down **Shift + Ctrl + Alt** (Windows) or **Shift + Command + Option + Control** (Mac) while launching InDesign. This can sometimes resolve unexpected crashes. For reference: Set preferences in Adobe InDesign

Let us know if this helps, and we'll assist further if needed.

Thank you,
Abhishek Rao

If InDesign says the files are corrupted, it is probably true. It could be that your drive is "going south."

Nope, the drive is a brand new SSD. The files are fine prior to crashing the first time, and then once a crash happens, all of this sets in.

What you're experiencing is not normal behavior with InDesign 15.1.1 and Catalina 10.15.6. I have exactly the same setup.

You might try running InDesign from another user. There can be corruption in computer user areas.
