InDesign Crashes with Fatal Error When Opening File Downloaded from Adobe Cloud

I saved a document from my Adobe files to my computer, but whenever I try to open it, the application crashes with a fatal error. 

Does anyone have a solution?

    I’ve just repeated the process and sent the report.
    I’m using InDesign v 21.3 on mac OS 26.3.1

    I fixed the issue by exporting the file as an IDML file.

    Thanks for reaching out abd sorry to hear you’re running into this. Could you please confirm the exact InDesign version you're using along with your OS details? Also, when the crash happens, do you see the Adobe Crash Reporter dialog and were you able to submit the report? I checked on my end but couldn't find any submissions linked to your community email. If you do see the reporter, please submit the report and share the email address you used via DM so I can check the logs. You can refer to this guide as well: https://adobe.ly/3P3u2W4

    Since the file was saved from Adobe Files, could you please check if it is still available here: https://adobe.ly/4cQMkTN. If yes, try signing out and back into Creative Cloud, re-download the file, and then open it in the InDesign desktop app to see if that helps. You can also try reverting the document to an earlier version from Creative Cloud and then download it again to check if that version opens locally. Ref: https://adobe.ly/4wbrBS4

    Thanks for the update and for confirming the details. I’m glad to hear you were able to recover the file successfully by exporting it as an IDML file.

    I also appreciate you submitting the crash report. However, I still could not locate any submission associated with your community email address. If you used a different email while submitting the report, could you please share it with me via DM so I can check the logs further?

    Since the issue was resolved after the IDML roundtrip, this points more toward a file-level corruption issue. Please feel free to reach out if you notice the same behavior again with this or any other cloud files.
