InDesign crashing on spell-check

I create several different InDesign books, each with 10 to 40 documents in it. The doc have linked PSD and AI files, and also some linked INDD files. These are typically blocks of standardized text, such as safety warnings, where we always what the exact same thing in several places.

When I run spell check, on either a single document or all opne documents, InDesign opens a linked embedded indd file EVEN IF IT NOT REFERENCED IN ANY OPEN DOCUMENT. If I ever had the linked file open earlier during by worday, it decides to open it, even thought it should NOT.

The most recent crash occured when I had a single document open, started to spell-check it, and it opened a linked document that was NOT referenced and then froze. After 30 seconds or so the app crashes. FIX THIS! It happens routinely!
