How do I make Master Pages w numbered pages?

I realized I have an old version but  it used to work. And I had figured out how to make 100 page books with facing pages.

The newer versions refer back to a page panel and the only ones I can find are under layout in the menu line and Pages (under Windows). That only connects to a menu that is labeled animation which quickly implodes (quits.)

You create Master Pages on the Pages panel

menu: New Master.

It works the  same way it used to:

  • Go to the Master page. You can do this in the Pages panel (Window menu > Pages) or in the Status bar popup.
  • Draw a text frame.
  • With the Type tool, click an insertion point and go to the Type menu > Insert Special Characters > Markers > Current Page Number

Add page numbering to your pages in Adobe InDesign Add page numbering to your pages in Adobe InDesign

What is happening instead?

InDesign doesn't have an InDesign C6.5 version. Please tell us exactly what verson and what operating system.

Jane's method has worked in all versions as long as I can remember. What is happening?
