InDesign CS6 won't delete pages from a 385 page document.

it's very likely that you remove pages with text frames that are threaded to other text frames on pages that you do not remove.

By doing that you do not remove the text that was in the frames of the pages you removed. You just removed the frames. The text is still there. Not visible, but there; in text frames that overflow.

And if your document preferences are set to handle overflowing text by adding new pages as long as no text is overflowing anymore this automatism will create instantly new pages.

So what should you do?
1. Select the text on pages you want to remove. Not the text frames. Select the text.

2. Remove the selected text.

3. Then remove the pages.

That is the expected behavior if you are using primary frames on the master page, have Smart Text reflow turned on in Preferences and when there is content on those pages in the primary frames.

Delete the content, then delete the pages.

Are you deleting the pages by clicking on their icons in the Pages panel and then clicking on the trash can at the bottom of the panel? When you do that do you get told that the pages contain objects and do you really want to delete? When you say yes, what exactly happens?

What operating system are you on?

Did you use the Primary Text Frame when creating a document? Are these pages empty or contain any text?

Do you have text reflow and primary text frame?
