Indesign editing running header

I have chapters that are like
Chapter X The Chapter Title

I don't need punctuation in the book.

I want to add a punctuation in the running header as
Chapter X. The Chapter Title

How can I edit the running header variable to add a dot after first two words?

Variables are single characters from InDesign's perspective, so it is not possible to add or remove glyphs or alter the formatting of a portion of the variable.

You might be able to do this with two variables, however, one for each part of the chapter title, based on a character style assigned to each part, separated by your punctuation. One other limitatation of variable is they do not break across lines.

I don't think one can edit just the value of the text variable without changing the source text. What I would suggest is the have the . in the source text as well but have it in a color that it is not visible like paper and then change the color in the running header using the Grep/Nested Style

Actually that might also have a problem and that is you won't be able to change the formatting of a single character in the value of the running header it seems

Not sure if it would be possible... without script?

Or... maybe... with GREP Styles...
