After exporting my InDesign file to a print ready pdf it turns into an Illustrator pdf file. Am I missing something in my export settings?

I rechecked it again and didnt' see anything about Illustrator.

A PDF is a PDF, there is no such thing as a 'illustrator PDF'. Do you mean your operating system sees the exported PDF as an Illustrator file? I believe this was a bug in Windows. Just set Acrobat as the program to open PDF again in your OS.

Yes, I'm sorry, my operating system (Mac) sees the exported PDF as an Illustrator file.

Where exactly do I set Acrobat to open PDFs? System Preferences?

Select any pdf in the finder, then use cmnd-I to show info for that file, below you can choose a standard app to open PDF's.
