Question

InDesign file does not print

I'm working with InDesign CC 2018 and never had any issues with my printer. Now I got a file (I call it file B) from my colleague which does not print (I know it does not print from his computer either). It only shows up quickly in the printer window: looking for printer/waiting for printer to finish, and vanishes.

I tried a few troubleshooting suggestions (save as idml, restart InDesign) but without success. If I create a new file with just a square drawn, this would not print either, while my old files still print. If I restart InDesign and create a new file first thing, it is printing. So there is something about having that file B open that creates errors, and affects all files created after.

Can I somehow restore file B? How could my colleagues application be modified to be able to print and crate printable files?

Thanks so much for any ideas!

Yes, Adobe's answer to this general problem of InDesign and Illustrator files failing to print is: CREATE A PDF!

For me this has not always been a successful workaround and I for one, wish Adobe would recognize that there is a large community of users having trouble with printing since the last update.

Please fix this BUG!

I had this problem years ago and it was solved by downloading the driver for your printer with version 5C.  I just reinstalled my system and again it wouldnt print.  Downloaded and installed Driver 5C and WA-LA we are back in business!!!!

Hope it  helps!!

Have you tried making a PDF file by choosing File > Export > Adobe PDF (Print)? Does that print from Adobe Reader or Acrobat?

Thank you. Yes, I can export it and it does print.

It's a good way out but I'd like to solve the problem at its roots.

It's sounds like you printer driver is incompatible with Adobe InDesign CC. What kind of printer? What operating system? Have you looked for updated printer drivers?
