InDesign File Opens as Read-Only on Windows 11

Hi,

We are having an issue with Adobe InDesign where files saved on a network drive are opening as read-only.

What’s happening:

  • Files open as read-only for multiple users
  • Save option forces “Save As”
  • On the server, files show as open by a user
  • That user does not actually have the file open

What I’ve checked:

  • Users confirmed file is not open on their device
  • Checked open sessions on the server > It shows as the file being open by the user eventhough it’s not
  • Disabled Preview Pane in Windows Explorer
  • Deleted .idlk lock files where found
  • Copied files locally → works fine (not read-only)
  • Checked permissions (all OK)
  • Restarted machines
  • Updated InDesign to latest version

This is happening across multiple files and users, only on the network drive.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

Thanks

Hi @skillful_magnetism545d,

Thanks for sharing all these details. InDesign supports working across networks and from removable media and is vigorously tested across multiple network configurations. However, not all existing network configurations which include different software, hardware, settings, and access rights have been tested. Therefore, your network or network configuration can cause errors, crashes, or unexpected behavior.
Just to confirm, when you mention you’re on the latest version, are you referring to InDesign 21.3 or a different version? Also, could you let me know if this is happening only on Windows machines or if Mac systems are affected as well?

To further isolate this, could you try a quick test. Create a new file locally on one machine, then save it to a different location on the server, not the same folder where you’re currently seeing the read-only issue. After that, delete the local copy and try opening the file from that server location. If that file opens normally, it would suggest that the specific network path where the issue is occurring may need to be reviewed by your network or IT team for permissions or access inconsistencies.

Additionally, I would recommend involving your IT team to clear any server-side caching and confirm what protocol is being used to access the files remotely. Since the files are working as expected when saved locally, it would also be helpful for the network team to review logs to better understand what’s causing this behavior.

Let me know how this goes and what you observe.
