Indesign files from Illustrator

How can I take art I created in Illustrator and use in Indesign? It keeps saing that jpeg, Pdf and AI files are not compatable.

You have to place them (File->Place) instead of open them.

@Mark27721819vhrn When I work in InDesign, if I need to place an image or any artwork, I will typically draw a 'Rectangle Frame,' this is the 'X' in the rectangle, called the "Rectangle Frame Tool.' After drawing it out, I can then place my image in that 'frame,' File - Place. The best part is then I can use the 'Fitting' Options to either fit the content proportionately or fit to the frame. Of course you don't want to distort your artwork too.
