Question

Indesign files not syncing with Incopy files

Hi:
My work group has had this problem periodically for over 15 years, I still do not have a good solution to it.

Our designers create an Indesign layout, and assign the various stories as an Incopy assignment.

The editors edit the .icml files to fit the pages.

When the designers open up the Indesign layout and update the content of the icml files, they do not wrap/hyphenate properly the way the editors have them in Incopy. The text can have different line breaks in the paragraph, causing the icml files to be either short or long as to where they should end on the page. This is not an update problem of the Incopy assignment or individual icml files.

I have noticed one thing: sometimes when there is an illustration with an irregular text wrap around it, the text wrap is different in Indesign than it is in Incopy. But that is not always the issue, sometimes it happens when there is a regular horizontal or square wrap, and sometimes where there is no text wrap at all.

Currently we are on Indesign/Incopy 21.1 working on MacBooks, on a shared server, but as I said this has happened periodically for many years.

Any insights would be appreciated.

thanks
Kevin Mulligan

Here is a very basic question: Is the text being controlled by well-defined paragraph styles that are not based on Basic Paragraph Style nor Normal, but rather based on No Paragraph Style so that they are uninfluencable?

If yes to the paragraph style, what are your Hyphenation and Justification settings?

The Incopy screenshot is with the text opened from the Incopy Assignment file ... not opening the Indesign file in Incopy.

Our text style is a paragraph style based on No Paragraph Style. Hyphenation and Justification settings here in screenshots

Humor me. Try adding the graphics to the InCopy content and open the INDD file instead of the assignment.

I recommend skipping the Assignments and just have the InCopy users open the InDesign INDD file directly in InCopy. From there, check out any stories for editing, check them back in when done. Everything should update properly when the InDesign user opens the layout.

A good idea Bob, but we have tried that in the past with no success (or inconsistent success, I can't remember).

And everyone is using the same version of the fonts and the same version of InCopy/InDesign? I've seen text wrap issues with older files converted from Quark where the "text wrap on effects text beneath" turned on. Make sure that's disabled.

If none of that helps, please provide screenshots and full system details.
