Question

InDesign flickering when selecting objects on macOS

When I select objects in InDesign, the inner screen starts to flicker when I release my mouse. I'm using MacOS 14 and InDesign 2024. I have updated to the latest of both with no change. I saw in these forums that rolling back to OS 13 helped, turning off GPU performance and removing rulers, all helped. I tried turing off and on GPU, no change. I don't want to roll back to OS 13 or InDesign 2023 or turn off rulers, since I need them. I also read that Apple and Adobe were working on a solution. Has any solution been made? Are there any other suggestions?

I have a user experiencing the flickering issue in both InDesign and Illustrator. The only way to avoid it is by turning off GPU Performance (inDesign -> Preferences -> GPU Performance  for example). The problem is the user needs GPU performance due to the complex files they deal with. Here are the details of the system and software:

Model: Mac Studio
Chip: Apple M2 Ultra

Memory: 192 GB
macOs: Sonoma Version 14.5
Monitor: Apple Thunderbolt Display 27 inch

InDesign: 19.4

Illustrator: 28.5

Any updates to prevent the flickering while using GPU performance will be appreciated.

I think disabling GPU is the only solution. What kind of issues does the user experience when working with GPU off?

You can also try to run general troubleshooting steps, but I doubt they'll make a difference in this case:

The user stated deeply missing animated zoom when it's off. They can scrub left to zoom out, right to zoom in with the same tool and can do it faster and more accurately than with Command-, Command+, or click dragging a selection with the Zoom tool. When stating faster, it is tremendously slow in complex files.

OS14 is meaningless. What is the full version? Early versions were bug-filled. InDesign 2024 likewise is meaningless. What is the full version?

Hi @Ricky38135728e17e,

Sorry to hear you're experiencing issues while selecting objects in InDesign. Would you mind telling us if you're connected to any external monitor? Does that happen with all files or with a specific file?

Is it possible for you to share a screen recording of the issue for investigation purposes?

We will try our best to help.

Thanks,

Harshika

It happens when connected to a external monitor, as well as when no external monitor is connected. It happens on any file used.

(Can't send a screen recording because it's not happening to me, despite all the "I"s in my post. I will try and get one from the person who is having the problem, but not sure they will know how to do it, even after I explain how.)

Thanks for sharing the info. Yes, the recording will help us investigate further. Also, if you can share an packaged InDesign file on which you're experiencing the issue would be helpful. You can share both recording and file with me over a private message.

We would also like to know if you're also experiencing this issue on other Adobe apps like Illustrator or Photoshop. Is it happening with a specific object or any object you select on the file.

We would love to investigate the issue with your shared information.

Thanks,

Harshika
