InDesign freeze while applying corrections from comments imported from PDF

Probably many of you are familiar with the problem described in the title.

For me the most frustrating part of the typesetting process in InDesign is lagging while applying corrections from comments imported from PDF.

I always suspected that it has sth to do with CEP HTML Engine, resp. Libraries.

But it seems that the source of the problem are... pencil markers (drawing tool) applied to the pdf in review.

InDesign manages to import them along with all the other corrections, comments, markes and insert them on layout. But when you try to do ANYTHING on the page or spread containg pencil marks, it completely freezes. As soon as you delete these markers in comments panel (which takes a while...) [three dots / delete], everythng comes back to normal.

So: simply FORBID your reviewers to use pencil (and floating comments and all fancy lines, strange objects of all sorts :)) And your life will be a lot easier 🙂

My intuition is that if InDesign cannot insert correction's anchor into the text itself, it gets absolutely catatonic.

Disclaimer: I guess that this problem concerns mainly those who deal with longer texts (i.e. book designers). When you work on a leaflet or a banner it is probably less painful 🙂

You don't have to do them 1 by 1 in the PDF

You can filter them

Select Pencil and the Colour (to rule out other marks)
Select them all
Add  a checkmark

Filter
Checked (turn off Pencil)

This will show you just the Pencil markups now (as they are checked)

Select All

Right Click

Delete

Whole process takes about 5 seconds

You can't delete if the filter for Pencil is on - so there's that - so make sure that's definitely turned off.

But as long as they are all check marks and you filter by Checked

You can then mass remove them.

Even better - ask clients to refrain from using the 'Pencil' markup.

Just say they are not imported and may not be seen - which is going to be true...

Long ago I decided to talk to my clients about my correction process in InDesign and told them that I will only accept PDFs in which the proper comment tools have been used in Acrobat:

This would be:

  • Delete text
  • Replace Text
  • Insert text
  • And if it has to be the note Tool

That's pretty much what I've done too. I created a 1 page cheat sheet with a small explanation.

Very straightforward.
