InDesign freezes and downloads something every time when an edit is made to a document

I've been working with InDesign files and links being on a remote server without issues for years, but during the past week some update has broken something in InDesign or Windows 10. Now, any edit to the document will cause InDesign to freeze while it downloads a lot of data over the internet. The actions that cause this, include:

  • Move an object
  • Resize an object
  • Rotate an object
  • Change an object's layer visibility

But then e.g. changing a color of an object does not cause this freezing while downloading.

 

The document that I'm currently working with, has only two external links, one tiny png file on a local SSD and one png file (3 MB) on a company server, accessed either via VPN or office WLAN. The document also has HTML links set to a few objects.

 

Windows 10 Resource Monitor tells that it's a system process that makes this heavy download, possibly tens or hundreds of megabytes. Depending on the available internet speed, the freeze can last from a few seconds to 1-2 minutes.

 

Turning preflight on or off doesn't change anything. Changing display perfomance doesn't change anything, either. And deleting the linked images doesn't help.

 

But, after removing all of the HTML links, the freezing and downloading stopped!

 

So, as a workaround, HTML links in InDesign cannot be used atm. Is this a known bug? Has anyone some idea how to get the HTML links working again?

 

InDesign v19.5 x64 and Windows 10 v10.0.19045.

New observation:

Turning off the "Auto Update URL Status" on the Hyperlinks panel menu will alleviate the problem. I can then edit most of the objects just fine but still, even selecting an object with an HTML link will cause InDesign to freeze and download a lot of unknown data.

 

Also, email links are fine, only HTML links will make InDesign freeze.

Thank you for providing such a detailed description of the issue. I can understand how frustrating it must be to experience these freezes, especially when working with HTML links in your document.

 

It’s great to hear that turning off "Auto Update URL Status" helped alleviate the issue somewhat. Since it seems to be related to HTML links, there may be network-related delays when InDesign is attempting to access or validate those URLs.

 

Could you please confirm the version of InDesign you’re using and provide any additional details about your Windows 10 setup? Also, is this freezing happening with a specific file or with all files that have HTML links? Lastly, does the issue persist when the file is stored locally, rather than on the remote server?

 

In the meantime, as a workaround, continue disabling the auto-update feature and let us know if you notice any further patterns or changes.
