InDesign Freezes and Shows "Not Responding" When Opening a 5–6 MB Document

I am trying to open a file roughly 6MB in size. I have done this thousands of times in the past without issue. However, today, the system just shows the loading beach ball and completely stalls. If I click on another screen to complete a different task while waiting for InDesign to load and then hover over the icon in my dock, it says “not responding”.

I have no idea what is causing this issue given the fact I created the original document without issue prior to today’s incident.

    Hello @Alexis29287789vtgd

Thanks for reaching out. I hope the suggestions shared by Eugene and Manan helped resolve the problem. If not, kindly share more details, such as whether this happens with specific files and, if so, share a sample. Also, confirm the version of the OS/InDesign installed, as Leo asked, so we can investigate this further.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

First thing I’d try is a restart it sounds basic but it clears a lot of weird “Not Responding” behaviour in InDesign.

    If it still won’t open:
    • Launch InDesign first, then open the file from File > Open.
    • Reset preferences (hold Ctrl/Cmd + Alt + Shift while launching).
    • Start with Shift held down to disable plugins.

If the document opens even briefly, save it out as IDML and reopen that it can clean up minor corruption.

Also check if the file has links on a network or external drive that might not be available, as that can cause it to hang while opening.

If you could also try restarting your computer in Safe Mode - then open InDesign and see if the file opens, if it does save it as IDML from there and restart in Normal Mode.

If this happens with only this document then either the document is corrupted or this is a font issue. If the document opens then export it to IDML and then resave it as INDD.

What are your InDesign and operating system versions? Can you retrieve a backup copy of your file? Also, did you try to restart your machine as sometimes this simple step fixes unusual issues like this one?
