Question

Indesign Frequently Crashing

Imac Retina, 2017

OS: Ventura 13.7.1
Indesign 20.1 (2025)

Recently, Indesign has been crashing every few minutes, usually after one of several normal actions, such as coping an object (shortcut = Option+Shift), dragging a page to the Create New Page icon, or simply moving a page. It seems extremeley volitile, so I'm having to save after every action.

I realise I'm not on the latest OS as the 2017 Imac doesnt support it, but I'd hope that the latest Indesign would still be supported by Ventura, in case that was the issue.

Would be grateful for any ideas.

In addition to other suggestions:

Try to roll back to an earlier version of InDesign 2025. It appears that the problem was introduced in 20.1 (although earlier versions had their own set of issues). You can do so from the Creative Cloud app:

There are more and more reports like yours - looks like a new bug in the latest update?

Please check other posts for more info.

Does it started after a recent upgrade? All files are affected? Or only one?

You could try resetting preferences? Or maybe even downgrading one minor version?

Or, if it's just one document - try IDMLing - export as IDML, open, save with a new name - do not overwrite your original file.

Thanks for the quick reply and advice.

I can't remember when I upgraded, tbh. All files are effected.

I'll have a look for those other posts and will try your suggestions too. I'm sorry that it appears to be a common issue, but good to know I'm not alone and that I'll hopefully be able to put off a hardware upgrade if Adobe manage to fix it.

Thanks again.

You're welcome and you've nothing to be sorry about - it's not your fault.
