Question

InDesign has become full of bugs the last years!

I have been using InDesign for nearly 30 years, and the app is just getting worse to work with! Full of bugs! So this is a suggestion to the developers -STOP using all your energy on fancy new AI features and make the app more stabil for daily work! I’m growing tired of conferencing with AI all the time to solve all the bugs. Such as - the marker becomes a spinning wheel - the app freezes and I must force it to stop - my personal work space is always putting in windows I have removed a billions of times! The view is not currently updating. Etc etc….Please make the app reliable again - PLEASE!!!!

Thank you Abhishek, for your quick and kind reply. I will go in to your questions tomorrow and answer you more in detail. But my point is, that I want to focus more generally on this negative development of InDesign I have experienced the latest years. I think I am not alone in this experience. I use more and more time of my working day fighting InDesign bugs. This shouldn’t be necesseray. So I please ask you to post this suggestion - to focus more on stabilizing the app instead of developing alle the new features - to the people in Adobe, who decides what to focus on.

    Hi @kristin@musette.no,

I'm really sorry to hear about the ongoing issues you've been experiencing with InDesign, especially after using the application for so many years. Thank you for taking the time to share this feedback. Application stability and reliability are extremely important, and I'd like to help investigate the specific issues you've mentioned.

Could you please confirm a few details?

    1. Which version of InDesign are you currently using? You can find this under Help > About InDesign (Windows) or InDesign > About InDesign (macOS).

    2. Are you working on Windows or macOS? Please share the OS version as well.

    3. When the spinning wheel appears or InDesign freezes, does it happen during a particular action, such as placing images, editing text, or switching pages, or does it occur randomly?

    4. Regarding your custom workspace, do the removed panels reappear after restarting InDesign, or while you're working?

    5. When the document view stops updating, does switching between Normal and Preview mode temporarily refresh the display?

In the meantime, could you please try the following?

    • For freezing and spinning cursor: Check whether the issue also occurs in a new blank document. If GPU Performance is enabled under InDesign Preferences, try temporarily disabling it and restarting the application.

    • For the custom workspace: Go to Window > Workspace > New Workspace, save your preferred panel arrangement under a new name, and check whether it persists after restarting InDesign.

    • For the screen refresh issue: Try pressing W while outside text-editing mode to toggle between Normal and Preview modes. You can also temporarily disable GPU Performance to check whether that makes a difference.

You can also refer to these helpx troubleshooting guides:

If the freezing continues, a short screen recording showing when it occurs would be very helpful. Please also let us know whether it affects all documents or only specific files.

Once we have these details, we can narrow down the causes and investigate further with the product team.

Thank you again for bringing these issues to our attention.
    Abhishek
