Question

Indesign IDLK and teams cloud sync conflict

My company uses Teams now for networking.  I run prepress and print production in the printshop.  When i open a INDD file that is inside the teams network, the IDLK appears on that folder in teams and the sync tries to manage it.  This causes a major lag in operation.  Is there a way to disable or move the the IDLK or disable teams sync on the IDLK file so there is no conflict ?  Running latest InDesign as of today.

please help.

Hi @Daniel36558323c52g,

Thanks for sharing the details. Sorry to hear about the frustrating experience.

To better assist you, could you please confirm the exact version of InDesign you're using? Also, is the performance lag and sync issue happening with all INDD files on the Teams-shared folder or only specific ones, especially those carried over from previous versions?

From what you've described, it does sound like a combination of two possible causes:

The IDLK file being actively synced by Teams (which isn’t ideal for real-time editing files like InDesign documents), and

Legacy file conversion lag, especially if you're opening older INDDs in a newer version of InDesign.

While InDesign does support working from networked or cloud-sync locations like OneDrive, Dropbox, and even Teams (via SharePoint), not all setups behave identically. Teams sync, particularly when working off shared drives can introduce latency, especially with temp files like IDLKs that change rapidly.

To avoid such issues, we generally recommend working on files from a local directory, like your Desktop, and then manually copying them back to the network drive, cloud folder, or removable media after editing.

Most people complain that the IDLK file is ignored on cloud storage. I'm one of them so I would find this to be a very useful feature. I'd be really interested in knowing why you don't want this.

If two people have the same file open that is a recipe for all kinds of issues.

well aparently my teams doesn't act like common cloud storage.  My coworker that sits next to me and i are the only ones that would use this.   Having the IDLK being accessed by teams slows down everything.

Sound more like a network than cloud storage but I'm not really familiar with the way I am with Dropbox or OneDrive. That said, I don't think you're going find a way around this without moving to Dropbox or OneDrive.

Again, though, still curious...why do you think this "slows down everything" when a)it's preventing a problem and b) you and the person sitting next to you are the only ones using it?

None of it makes sense to me, and I'm only telling you this because I think you'll find most folks on a collaborative workflow like this would want the warning that someone else had the file open.

You can't disable or move the IDLK. For the second part of your question, you need to check the Teams settings or contact your Teams rep for a possible solution.

Admittedly, I know nothing about using Teams for networking, so others may chime in with additional info.
