Question

indesign - import photoshop image with levels and effect

if I amount a photo in indesign, indesign does not maintain the merge methods of the levels. Why?

I have a white background with black, but the level has a "multiply" setting. In indesign does not recognize him.

    Hi Stefano,

InDesign does not recognize layer transparency effects of placed PhotoShop files like "multiply" in effect that the placed image will not interact with InDesign's contents on the page.

    What can be done?
As a workaround import the PSD in Adobe Illustrator while you convert the PhotoShop layers to Illustrator objects.

Then save as AI with PDF enabled and place the AI file. Then the applied layer effect interacts with other InDesign contents on the page.

Here some screenshots with the workaround.
A very simply PhotoShop document. One layer. Layer effect set to "Multiply":

Open the PSD with Illustrator where you convert layers to Illustrator objects. ( From my German Illustrator CS6. )

Save as AI file with PDF enabled.

Place the AI file in InDesign. Here a sample where I placed the AI file next to the PSD file with a rectangle in the background filled with a color gradient so you can see the effect of "Multiply" more easily:

Here a more realistic sample with two layers where layer "Shadow" is set to "Multiply".

    AI placed and selected:

    PSD placed and selected:

InDesign does not honor blending modes in placed files with transparency. Photoshop pixels set to Multiply will multiply over other Photoshop pixels, but will not multiply over InDesign objects.

Do you use it native .psd? If this is some .tif re-save and re-place as .psd.

Remember, never say you can't do something in InDesign, it's always just a question of finding the right workaround to get the job done. © David Blatner
