Question

Indesign index adding page number references to pages that don't have markers

Hi there,

I've looked at tutorials and videos trying to figure out what the issue is, but I'm about to pull my hair out. If anyone can help, I would greatly appreciate it!

I am using Indesign CC 2018, and my operating system is MacOS High Sierra version, 10.13.4

I'm working on an indesign document that is 102 pages long, and there's an index in the back. The index has been generated and works fine for the most part, however, there's a few entries that are not giving the correct page numbers....or shall I say, page numbers are being added where there are no markers.

For example, let's say we're talking about family caregivers...which is listed as one of the topics. The reference page for that topic is page 45, and there's a marker on that page.

Family caregiver.......45, 102

When I generate the index, two numbers appear as the reference pages....45, and 102. Page 102 is the back cover, and there are definitely no markers on that page. so I'm not sure where that page number is coming from. This is happening for a few of my topics. I tried deleting them altogether and creating the topic and reference all over again to see if that would help, and it doesn't. Does anyone have an idea of what I could be doing wrong?

What happens when you remove the back cover? Do those page references (like 102 for 'Family caregiver) still appear?

Another possibility: could there be any markers in text on a hidden layer?

What does the Index panel show you? Can you see the page references there?

Hi Peter,

When I remove the back cover, it now reads:

Family caregiver....45, 101,

It looks like it's just putting the last page at the end for some reason.

All layers are unlocked, and everything is visible. In the Index panel, there's only one reference listed under family caregiver, and it is on page 45...nothing else is listed. That's what I can't figure out...there is no other reference listed, yet the page number is showing up.

I have been having issues with indesign crashing when I do "command Y" to view and copy markers for instances of topics that had got missed. Do you think that could have something to do with it? I did try to create an idml file but it crashes when I'm trying to do that too.

I had this happen before and it turned out that I had a hidden invisible marker that wasn't showing up anywhere. Not sure if that is your case, but the way I found it was locking my layers down, then unlocking each one and selecting the whole page. I finally found a weird selection and deleted it.

I know you have already researched this, but I want to give you this link just in case.

Here is Adobe's link about markers.
