Question

InDesign is unusably slow

For the past year this program has become slow and unresponsive to the point of being completely unusable. Any command that I give the software is followed by a 5-15 second lag on average - this is not an exaggeration. This problem persists with existing documents, INDD and INDL, as well as with brand new documents saved to my desktop.

For example: Create a new document. When the document loads, create text box and begin to type. 15 seconds later the letters appear in the box. Actions taken during the lag are ignored by the software. Other applications on my machine are also significantly impacted by this performance issue, even the mouse stutters and freezes. Trying to use other software while InD is "thinking" can often result in the other applications to show a (not responding) error. Because InD is so unresponsive, I need to use Task Manager to force close - even this process can take up to a minute to complete.

I'm not certain, but I believe the problem with lag is worse when trying to using the text tool, though all actions I make using the software are much slower than they should be on this device. Using InDesign makes my entire machine unresponsive!

Clicking into any field (e.g. Font Size) will highlight the current value However, I'm unable to change the value. Once highligted, double clicking the value again will then allow me to change the number, but even this does not work consistently.

I have not tried reverting to Windows 10.

Steps I've taken to remedy:

  • Reset preferences
  • Disable preflight
  • Ensure that my PC meets the system requirements
  • Update to newest version (this issue has persisted through multiple version updates)
  • Uninstall/Reinstall software
  • Update display and other drivers
  • Ensure that this is not a cloud storage issue (as mentioned, this problem exists on a brand new install, reset preferences, brand new document)
  • Run as administrator
  • Delete as many fonts as I can in Windows font manager
  • Disable fonts from Adobe Cloud

My system:

  • Windows 11 (64-bit)
  • Intel i-5-9600k @ 3.7Ghz
  • AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT
  • 64 Gb Ram
  • Windows and InDesign both installed on primary SSD
  • My subscription to Adobe Cloud is through my employer, a state university.

Couldn’t agree more. I’ve moved 98% of my work flow to Figma. I only use Adobe to access old files and convert them over to figma, cheaper, faster, more beautiful, better UI. Adobe can go hang out with Quark.

This topic is nearly a year old. Feel free to start a new thread about your experience and include your specs and steps you’ve tried to remedy. I’m closing this thread as it’s no use piling on something that has had no activity for a while.

UPDATE: Uninstalling InDesign and installing version 19.5.3 has seemed to resolve this issue.

Can you check what Windows updates you have recently installed in your system? Like from November?

What kind of AntiVirus software are you using?
