InDesign keeps crashing when saving

Hi everyone,

I hope you can help me. InDesign keeps crashing on my laptop. It has always worked fine, but for the past two months I’ve been having constant problems.

This is what happens:
I work with both existing and new documents. As soon as I try to save them, I either get error code (2) or a message saying that InDesign cannot complete the request. After that, the program stops responding (I have to close it via Task Manager) or it crashes completely.

I work on a Windows laptop and save files via OneDrive (this is required for work). I have already tried the following:

  • Saving to a different location so the file path is not too long

  • Using short file names

  • Setting the recovery files to a different location

  • Reinstalling the program

  • Creating new files to check whether the issue is related to the original design

  • Using only fonts that come with InDesign and no custom installed fonts

  • Reinstalling my own fonts

  • Creating a recovery file

  • Saving as IDML and then editing/saving that file

Sometimes the program works fine for a few hours, and then suddenly I can no longer save.

Saving via “Save As” and creating a second version sometimes works, but then I’m unable to save that second version again.

    Hi everyone,

Thanks for sharing the details. Based on what you’ve described, this issue matches a known problem caused by the Microsoft update KB5074109, as mentioned by the community experts. Microsoft has already released a fix for this, and you can find the recommended solution in the highlighted response on this thread: https://community.adobe.com/questions-671/indesign-files-corrupted-and-unable-to-save-after-windows-11-update-kb5074109-january-2026-post-2-1546893/index2.html?postid=7484108#post7484108.

Please try the steps shared there and let us know how it goes.

    Looking forward to your update.

    Abhishek

I've uninstalled the Microsoft update and so far it seems to be working.

This is a faulty Windows Update operating system patch (update KB5074109) that is affecting file save and especially OneDrive, of which I am not a fan. I would go to Windows Update and patch to the latest hotfix update available. Others have already commented here what to look for. Some have uninstalled recent updates in order to go back to a Windows 11 condition from roughly December. So patch forward or rollback, and either way you should be back in business and able to grapple with all the other actual InDesign gremlins!

Hello, I have exactly the same problems and it’s hard to verify if everything I’ve done on my magazine is correctly saved between the crashes...

I have the exact same issue. Trashed the preferences, uninstall and reinstall Indesign. The problem persists.

Maybe this can work for you? Was commented by someone else: InDesign files corrupted and unable to save after Windows 11 update KB5074109 (January 2026) - Post #2 | Community

I'm going to check if this'll work.

Full version and build of InDesign and your operating system as well as processor and RAM, please. Also, please make sure that OneDrive files are set to be available off line.

Which version of InDesign is this? Did you trash InDesign preferences?

2026 version, I did trash the preferences. Another suggestion was starting indesign while pressing ctrl alt shift (i think). did that, didn't work eiter.
