Question

Indesign linked tables-2018 not holding paragraph and character styles when link updates

Good day,

I am designer working on a very large catalog with a number of outside marketers making changes to an excel document to keep the catalog current. I set up paragraph, character styles and table/cell styles according to the tutorials and all of the forums and examples say that the formatting should hold. It doesn't. I have tried multiple ways of doing it. Is there something basic I am missing in the new update? Like a box that needs to be checked? Or is the only true way to do it is buy an outside plug in?

As Bob said, placing unformatted is the way to operate. Also, making your hierarchy of Table and Cell Styles carefully--without use of the Type Tool in any table text--is the best way to make faultless Table and Cell Styles. That is something that few tutorials ever mention.

meaning?

Are you saying that you create the entire style without using a table you already created that it picks up on the fonts and spacing and stuff?

Yes, exactly. Otherwise, your table is polluted with multiple over-rides that can be hard to eradicate and/or control.

How are you placing the tables? You should be choosing unformatted table in the options when doing so.

Yep I choose unformatted tables and then use my table style in the next option and import. when I update the link it unformatted everything
