1. InDesign Loses Hyperlinks from Placed InCopy Text

Hyperlinks created in InCopy are randomly dropping from InDesign documents. I can find no repeatable pattern or reason.

Documents that had placed InCopy text with Hyperlinks drop the link altogether from the Hyperlinks panel in InDesign.

Video of the process:

Problem and Workaround

I found this workaround, and it was fine last month, but the InCopy Hyperlinks are now dropping again!

  1. If I create a New document and place the InCopy text with a hyperlink, everything works fine.
  2. If I OPEN a previously created InDesign document with InCopy text, the hyperlinks drop intermittently.
  3. My InDesign Hyperlinks panel is sorting alphabetically, so the Securing the ServiceNow AI Platform link should appear in the Hyperlinks panel after the InCopy text is updated.
  4. The hyperlink does not appear.

    To make it work:
  5. Copy the InCopy text frame from the previously created InDesign document.
  6. Paste the InCopy text frame into a New document.
  7. Confirm the Hyperlink appears in the panel in the new document
  8. Copy that InCopy text frame from the New Document.
  9. Paste the InCopy text frame into the previously created document.
  10. The Hyperlink magically appears in the previously created document.

I’ve attached a video of the workaround and screenshots showing how I add the Hyperlink in InCopy, save, and update the modified link in InDesign.

— I am working on about 21 white papers that get updated every 2–3 months, and this keeps happening. 🤬

2. InCopy Accessibility BROKEN

Also, when I turn off Shared Hyperlink Destination (which was another whole can of worms a few months ago) and add the Accessibility text, that accessibility text gets completely REMOVED and doesn’t carry through to the PDF!

Steps

  1. Add a Hyperlink in InCopy.
  2. Un-check Shared Hyperlink Destination.
  3. Add Accessibility text (for the visually impaired).
  4. Click OK and Save.
  5. Place that text in InDesign.
  6. Open the InCopy text (in InCopy).
  7. Double-click the Hyperlink.
  8. BOTH settings are GONE.
  9. Shared Hyperlink Destination is BACK ON, and the Accessibility field is EMPTY!

This InDesign issue with placed text from InCopy keeps coming up. It popped up a little over a month ago. I found a workaround, and now the hyperlinks are dropping again. PLEASE HELP!

This issue keeps rearing its ugly head. Please fix this, ADOBE! It popped up a little over a month ago and keeps coming back randomly.

  2. InCopy link modified in InDesign:
  3. Confirmed link is there in InCopy and saved:

  4. InCopy link updated in InDesign (after confirming the link is correct in InCopy):
  5. Still no Securing the ServiceNow AI Platform (with no number) hyperlink:

  6. Created a new doc, copied the InCopy text from a previously created InDesign doc, and pasted that text frame from the new doc (confirming the Hyperlink is there):

  7. Pasted the InCopy text frame from the new InDesign to the previously created InDesign white paper:
  8. Hyperlink is there!

    @Abhishek Rao

I’m not sure how to send you my Zipped and packaged InDesign file. I sent you a private message last week.

    @Abhishek Rao,

Creating an IDML did not work. It actually caused the document to drop two more hyperlinks, which were created in InDesign. Plus, the InCopy link still doesn’t work.

It also introduced the problem of turning back on Shared Hyperlink Destination. This was a huge issue for me six months ago, when it kept opening the previous version of the InDesign file, instead of going to the URL. So I have worked to turn that off in all our documents.

    Save as IDML

    Open IDML

I will have to try my workaround again. It will be a total nightmare to double-check all the white papers with InCopy hyperlinks to make sure they are working in InDesign.

I will send you the ZIPped and packaged file.

    Hi @KellyMcCathran31063592,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, and I’m really sorry for the frustrating experience here, especially with this affecting multiple recurring projects.

I tested this workflow on InDesign 21.3 from my end, including updating hyperlinks from linked InCopy stories into an existing INDD document, but I could not consistently reproduce the issue in my workflow so far.

Could you please try saving the affected INDD document as an IDML file first, then reopen that IDML and resave it as a brand-new INDD file, and check whether the hyperlink behavior still persists in the newly rebuilt document?

If the issue continues after that, please share the packaged INDD file for testing using the steps here:
    https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/using/preflighting-files-handoff.html#package_files

If the files are confidential, feel free to share them with me via DM using any cloud-sharing service such as Google Drive, Dropbox, or similar.

Please let me know how it goes, and I’ll continue checking this further from my side as well.

    Thanks,
    Abhishek

    @Abhishek Rao,

I will give that a try. Thank you.

Also, I can post the dropping of Accessibility text on hyperlinks issue on the InCopy forum if that is the proper spot. Do you know if this is a known bug? (I realize this may not be your area.)
