Indesign Mail Merge

Hi All

 

I have just installed InDesign for Adobe, in order to merge directly into a PDF, because converting to Word destroys the formatting of my target document.  However, after installation, the "Select Data Source" in the utilities menu is greyed out.  Can anyone help?  Thank you.

InDesign data merge is described in the excellent online InDesign video training courses on LinkedIn Learning - you can get 30-days free access. As you seem new to InDesign it would be worth you undertaking a course on using the whole application.

In addition, when I try to drag & drop the data source file into InDesign, I get an error below, irrespective of format.  I've tried .xlx, .csv and .txt, with the same message:
