indesign makes placed objects look weird! help!!!

hi all,

im new to indesign and when i tried to place a file i created in illustrator, it made it look all weird! i took a screenshot of it:

this isnt how it should look, with the edges all rough! help!!! am i doing something wrong?!?

Check your Preferences > Display Performance options. If it's set at Typical, by default, vectors will used a lower-res preview. If you change it to High Quality, it will render vectors as good as your screen can display them. You can override this under View > Display Performnace, but you can also set this on an individual basis... e.g select that graphic, right-click and select the Display Performace for that particular image. By default it will use the overall View setting.

But, if you have a decently-powered computer, I recommned you change your main setting as above to High Quality

  1. What file type is the placed file, ai, pdf, eps or something else?
  2. How did you place it?
  3. What display performance did you choose?
  4. When you placed it, did you embed or link the asset? If it is linked, is the link still alive or broken?
  5. Did you apply any effect in Illustrator?
