InDesign Multi-numbered list inside numbered paragraph

Dear all,

I would like to ask someone for help. I am struggling an issue with multi-numbered list in my Id document.

I want to create this:

1. Chapter name 1

text

1.1 Section name

text

1.2 Section name

2. Chapter name 2

text

2.1 Section name

text

1. name of the product

2. name of the product

3. name of the product

4. name of the product

text

4.1 Section name

Instead of 4.1 I am not able to number it as 2.2 Section name as previous Section name is numbered as 2.1.

When there is no numbering within the sections at the beginning of the document everything goes well. But when I insert a list into a section, the next section numbering does not work in the rest of the document 😞

Can anyone help? I do not think Id cannot manage it.

You need to have two different ParaStyles and one needs to be Level 1 and another Level 2.

It could be made to work with a second or third level, but those secondary lists are distinct from the main list. Using two list name/schemas completely separates them, which works because the short list doesn't depend on the primary list's state and needs to be restarted independently of where it appear in the main list.

Two named (and separate) lists is a more robust solution than a third level to one list.

You've got it all right, I think, except giving your inner list a different 'style' name. For your short inner list, go here —

—and give the list a distinct name like "Items" or "Products."

It can't hurt to give your main list a style name as well — perhaps just "Main." Make sure all styles within it are assigned to that same name.

That will make them entirely separate entities, without any collision of numbering.

A good example of why you should never use the [default] or [Basic] version of any style or option.
