InDesign not closing

Lately since the the most recent Indesign update, I've been having a lot of trouble getting the application to actually close. I can still click everything else and run files and make edits etc, but when I want to close the application nothing happens. I also turned on "Reset preferences on quit" but that didn't really help. Anyone know how to fix this?

I have the same problem. Indesign does not close. I have recently reinstalled the all windows and indesign but nothing helps. Windows 11 Pro with latest updates. And Indesign 21.6 x64.
I had the same problem before reinstalling the all operative system.

Hi @Marcop,

Sorry you're experiencing this, especially after already reinstalling both Windows and InDesign.

Since you're on InDesign 21.6, could you please try a few tests to help us narrow this down?

Restart Windows, launch InDesign without opening any document, and check whether File > Exit / Alt+F4 closes it normally.
Relaunch InDesign, create a new blank document, close the document, and then try exiting InDesign again.
Before exiting, check Window > Utilities > Background Tasks and let us know if any task remains running or stuck.
Temporarily turn off Window > Output > Preflight > On and test again.
If you use any third-party InDesign plug-ins/extensions, temporarily disable them and retest.

Since reinstalling hasn't helped, please also try testing InDesign 21.5.1 from Creative Cloud Desktop > InDesign > Other Versions and let us know whether the same quit issue occurs there.

If the problem happens again, please share a screenshot of Windows Task Manager showing InDesign's CPU/memory usage while it refuses to close.

what's your operating system version and also the exact InDesign version? what methods do you use to quit the app?

I recently updated my Indesign because it kept prompting me to. I think the version is 20.5.1 or 21.0. I tried to click the X to close it but it wouldn't budge. Then I tried to right click it from the taskbar and clicked "close window" but there was no prompt to force close it.

and what's your Windows version? to check your InDesign version, use the About InDesign menu (at least on Mac, not sure it's the same on Windows). in any case, I'm sure Windows users here will provide additional feedback soon.
