InDesign not responding on save

Mac 15.3.2 - InDesign 20.2

I have a troubling issue that I have not been able to resolve. I'll be working on an ID file, and will save the document... and then I get the spinning beach ball, which never resolves - I get a "not responding" error message, and have to force quit the application.

When I attempt to relaunch InDesign, one of two things will happen: 1) it will stall at launch, with the "not responding" message (requiring another forced quit) or, InDesign will launch, but then when I attempt to open the file I was working on, I'll get another beach ball and "not responding."

It seems the only thing that will get me out of this frustrating loop is to reboot the whole system.

I have done everything from resetting preferences to un-installing ID and doing a fresh install. Nothing seems to help.

This has been happening for awhile, I don't know if it was provoked by a recent OS update, or what.

Is anyone else having this issue, and is there a resolution?

Hi @graphx7,

From your description, it seems that the issue might be specific to a particular file. Could you please confirm if this happens with all files or just the one you're working on?

Mike's suggestion about checking whether the file is stored locally on your hard drive is a good step, so please confirm that as well. If the file is on a network drive or external drive, it could affect performance. Also, it would be great if you could try the suggestion shared by Dirk and let us know how it goes.

Additionally, I recommend trying to open the file in Safe Mode on your Mac. This can help identify any third-party software related issues. Ref: Safe Mode on Mac.

Looking forward to your update.

It seems like the issue is confined to this one file - however, there is no issue with this file when I access via VPN from my home Mac (same OS, same ID 20.2) so that's puzzling. I transferred from the server to local drive, and the problem persisted.

Hi @graphx7,

Thanks for sharing those details. Since the issue seems to be confined to this one file but doesn’t occur when accessing it via VPN from your home Mac, there could be a difference in how your company’s corporate network handles file access compared to the VPN setup. If the problem only happens when saving to the server, it might be worth checking with your company’s network team to understand how the server is being accessed when working from the office.

Also, just to clarify, are you using the same Mac both at home and in the office?

Looking forward to your update!

While the stall in this thread was on open, the same principles apply.

Please produce and post similar screenshots (for your multiple stalls) from Activity Viewer.

Sometimes these can tell more  - comparable to a crash log.

Is the file local on your hard drive?

No - it is stored on the server. I can move to the local drive to see if that helps, however when I access the file via VPN from my home Mac, I have no issues. So that makes me think the issue is something local on my Mac... yes?
