InDesign not saving with correct filename/type

I'm having a new issue saving InDesign files in Windows.

I have a file named, for example, New Flyer Layout 8.23 in Windows. When I used to save a file with this naming structure, it would save fine as an InDesign file named New Flyer Layout 8.23.indd.

Suddenly, it's saving with the filename New Flyer Layout 8 and the filetype .23 document, which it wants to try to open in Photshop. I clearly see what's happening -- it's no longer appending .indd to the end of the file and, instead, taking anything in the filename after the period as the filetype.

What I don't know is why, and how to fix it. Thankful for any help.

I would suspect that you've turned off showing extensions for known file types in Windows...

Thanks. I'll try and find that setting and check it.

Unfortunately, that won't work anymore.

You may think that your file suffix is defined by what follows the second period, but MacOS has defined that by what follows the first one for quite a while. What version of MacOS are you using, how long have you had this issue and what version of InDesign you are using can help us help you with your issue.

Or, you could use a dash between 8 and 23 instead of a period and be free of the problem forever more. It's really that easy.

Hope this helps,

Randy

Thanks, Randy. I'm not working on a Mac with this file -- apologies if I posted in the wrong forum. As noted in the initial post, I am working on Windows. Windows 10 Enterprise, specifically. The version of InDesign I am running is v 18.5, which should be the latest.

As best as I can remember, this has only been happening for a week or two.

The dash idea is fine for new files, but I have several year's worth of files that I regularly use and they all use the old naming convention I've noted, with the X.XX date at the end. It would not be fun to rename all of these files, even if I just do it as I use them. But if that's my best choice, I'll do it.

Frustrating that this appears to have changed for no reason in the past couple of weeks, unless it was related to a recent upgrade, in which case I wish I could just roll back to a version where this did not happen.

In any event, I appreciate your help.

Actually, it'll work the same way with Windows. Give it a try. I think you'll be happy with the result. Two periods are at the root of your evil.
