InDesign paragraph palette glitch.

I have an issue with inDesign 2017CC when attempting to manually change the paragraph spacing. If for instance I want to type in 4 points in the palette, the number 4 ends up in the body copy. NOT the palette. It's really frustrating as if I've selected a line, word or a paragraph, inDesign deletes what's highlighted and instead inserts the number 4 or whatever is chosen as the paragraph spacing into the body copy. Any solutions?
