Question

InDesign printing set up

Hello everyone,

I have 135x190mm size document, facing pages, and I would print on a4 format. I have total 188 pages in 94 spreads. I would like to print 2 pages on both sides, fold each sheet and then stack them and glue.

2up perfect bound doesn't put my pages in order, I don't know if it's possible to set up?

Thanks

Tina — before you spend too much time on this, I suggest you print some test pages. Backing up successfully, as you‘ve described, may be difficult due to alignment problems.

What kind of alignment problem do you see as potentially causing an issue?

The OP stated: “I'll be printing it to my desktop printer, but I'll have to print one side first, then flip and print the other.”

It’ll be difficult to align the backup with this setup on an office printer.

That‘s why I suggested s/he tested it first to see if it’ll be successful.

When using Print Booklet and 2 up Perfect Bound, you also need to set the Signature Size.

A Signature Size of 4 will produce the following:
[4-1, 2-3]  [8-5, 6-7]  [12-9, 10-11] etc.

A Signature Size of 8 will produce the following:

[8-1, 2-7, 6-3, 4-5]  [16-9, 10-15, 14-11, 12-13] etc.

If you want the following:

188-1, 2-187, 186-3, 4-185, etc.   Then you need 2up Saddle Stitch

So Signature Size of 4 should work?

I have 7 pages before numeration ( which is on my A master page), so my pages go 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,1,2...181...is that messing with page order?

In your example, you have the first seven pages, then restart numbering with "1" on the eighth page of book. For Imposition to work (regardless of saddle stitch or perfect bound) you need to have odd page numbers on right, even pages numbers on left.

Also imposition is relative to page order, not folio designation.

For example, Perfect Bound 2 up + 4 Page Signature (I will replace letters for numerals for the first 7) will result in the following:

[D-A, B-C]  [1-E, F-G]  [2-5, 3-4].... this could be part of the problem

Beyond the arduous work of figuring out the imposition order and executing it manually, I don't think you'll accomplish that A4 > manual duplex > fold > perfect-bind scheme.

Is there no chance of just printing on A5? The one-page-per-side manual duplex wouldn't require any imposing; just odd/even, then stack and glue.

So you say there isn't a solution to print 2 pages on one side, 2 on the other, then fold?
I mean like this https://image.slidesharecdn.com/b3a58726-9e06-4a94-a226-d32a8126515c-151211194049/95/bindingtypesv2-10-638.jpg?cb=144986…
I thought of folding each sheet and stack like this V V V V V V, plus I'll save paper, cause I only got a4 sheets, so if I print 4 pages on one sheet (2 on each size) I'll have less waste.

Are you printing this to your own duplex desk-top printer or sending it out to a commercial printer?

I'll be printing it to my desktop printer, but I'll have to print one side first, then flip and print the other. I think there are settings for that as well.
