InDesign Recovery - Give me hope!

Hi all,

Long story short I was using a external HD to store and work from, the cable connecting it from the HD to the USB port was really dodgy so would often disconnect with the slightest movement (which is bad I know with files open etc) but the files and HD would always reconnect if it did happen to disconnect.

Anyway, yesterday I heard it make a noise (coming from the HD) as if it disconnected, it had. But this time I reconnected it and most of the files within the folders had gone, some were still there but most weren't, including the file I was working on.

I've managed to recover some of the lost data I had on backups elsewhere but some of the recent data I didn't have backed up.

When I opened indesign again it was trying to recover the file as it had not shut down correctly/disconnected, however I was unable to recover it as it could not locate the original file which disappeared off my external HD. With this in mind, I have reason to believe I can still recover the data as even now, a day later, it comes up with a pop up when I open about postponing the recovery and saving the recovered data - I assume for when it locates the original file.

So my question is, if I don't recover the complete original file through some HD recovery software or something am I able to use the recovery file (located in library>users>cache>indesign>recovery or whatever the file path is, there is data in there still) and force it to open? Or spoof the original file path to a new one so it opens?

Any ideas or thoughts? Would be a massive help.

Thanks guys.

FYI, some of the files in the hidden indesign recovery folder included a 13mb DBTmp file which was made on the same day but before I lost the data and a 'RecoveryData' file which I also believe would be from when it crashed/disconnected the first time as I have made sure each time indesign is opened I have selected to save and postpone the recovery.

... I am running CS6 on a sort of old mac OS, 10.7 I think it is.

    Hi Mjones9200,

Sorry about the inconvenience. We are sorry to inform you, if the data is erased from hard drive then we would not be able to recover it, but if there is any file which you can see on hard drive but is not opening anymore, you can share that file at corrupt_indesign_docs@adobe.com . We will try our best to recover your file.

    Regards,

    Srishti
