Suddenly when I right click a placed image to 'edit original' it is not an option. What happened to it and how do I get it back?

So the was image embedded? That was the issue? Glad it was that easy.

Here's how InDesign works... as a default, images under 48k (tiny!) are embedded when placed. All other images are linked. Someone has to choose to embed the image to change this—perhaps someone else embedded the image and you didn't know? At any rate, having the Links panel open while you are working eliminates the guesswork—InDesign shows the embed icon to the right of the file name, and again at the bottom of the panel. I outlined both indicators for you in my screenshot.

    Hi Renater:

What version of InDesign are you using, and what OS?

And is the image embedded and not linked by chance? Check the Links panel. If an image is embedded, Edit Original is not available. If it is embedded, you can unembed it.

Ah, that makes sense. I'd consider it a UI deficiency. The option can be there disabled (and in parentheses say "embedded").  That would eliminated our confusion.

I want to believe inDesign copies your image to the document, so if your original image somehow gets misplaced, the image still shows, but in this instance, the edit original option simply disappears from the menu.

I consider this a bug. The option should always appear and be available and tell you instead, I can't find your original.

can you provide more information about your setup? What version, what OS. Have you reset preferences?
