Question

Indesign running slow / Spinning Ball appears with every click

Hello!
I am having big problems working with InDesign lately. The spinning ball keeps appearing with every click I do and spinning for 3seconds to 1 minute. No matter if it is a large document or one with only 5 slides (with no images, only text). Last time it appeared cause I was flipping a rectangular box 90°... > you can see this in the video attached.

I have the newest Indesin Update 17.4 and a brand new macbook 14 inch 16GB RAM, 500GB free space.

I bought the macbook especially for working in Indesign, besides Photoshop the only programm I use – since Indesign just stopped working on my old machine from 2012 – and funny enough now it is the ONLY programm that is not working. Photoshop and Illustrator work fine, even with a large amount of big files. So it must be Indesign right?
I use it professionally and i lost a lot of time due to this problem!

I tried, as suggested in other threads:

- deactivating Internet connection

- clearing Indesign Cache

- the quality is on "normal" - and even on the fastest image quality where you only see the grey boxes it still lagged a lot and gave me the ball!
- no CPU view

- deleting and installing InDesign again

- working from the harddrive locally

- deactivating my font managing software

- it is happening with every file, so no its not a corrupt file

nothing worked.

Sometimes it works fine for some time, but then suddenly after I do something (I thought its only when I import new images, but its also very random) it comes and doesnt stop for hours…

What's wrong Adobe? I am not the only one having this issues, I read so many similar posts. I am paying more than 500€ per year for this software, this is not ok at all!

  1. Did you link or embed images?
  2. How big is the indd file?
  3. How many fonts do you have installed?

1. I link images always
2. It happens with small sized files to big sized. From 1MB only (and with no pictures or any vector objects placed)
3. Usually 2000. But I deactivated them all and have now only 73 – and Indesign keeps crashing.

Now I cant even open it without it immediatly crashing, after having worked on 3 different documents, that are only text. (Business Cards and other Stationary)

Try to run InDesign on a clean user account:

Create a new account in System Preferences > Users & Groups, switch to the new account and try to use InDesign.

Will it make any difference?

I tried almost all of them, except the safe mode.

I will try that and write back here.
