InDesign Share for Review 'Error Updating Artifact' Preventing Link Update

Hi everyone,

I’m having trouble with the 'Share for Review' feature in InDesign yet again. I’ve already double-checked all my links, but I can't find a solution. This is the second time this has happened with this specific client, and for the sake of professionalism, I cannot generate a new link.

Does anyone have a 'magic trick' to fix this situation? I’m honestly feeling quite discouraged.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Sandrine

    Hi everyone,

Thanks for your continued patience and for sharing all the details here. I understand how disruptive this has been, especially when it impacts your review workflow and client communication.

I wanted to share an update that the issue related to “There was an error updating the artifact” for larger or more complex documents has been addressed in the latest InDesign Prerelease build 21.4.0.49.

Could you please try installing this latest Prerelease version from the Creative Cloud Desktop app under the Apps tab and test the Share for Review update workflow again? This will help confirm if the fix resolves the issue in your case.

If you’re not part of the Prerelease program yet, you can join using the links below:

    Looking forward to your update.

I’m having this same issue, the first Share for Review was ok, but subsequent updates are coming up with this error, it’s infuriating, it looks so unprofessional when you are trying to proof something with a client. Not to mention the time wasted trying to figure out a fix, has anyone found one? Adobe sort this out please!

Thanks Abhishek...you have a tough job.

I followed the links and had a look. I don’t really have the time to figure any of that out.

Suggestion for Adobe: invest less in the AI pipedream and sort out the software we all (used to) love.

I’ve been using Adobe for more than 30 years because it is/was awesome and reliable. I’ve spent thousands on the software over the years. But things have changed and I’ve dumped it all but InDesign.

I don’t need AI to summaries my PDFs and really bad AI generated Photo Stock...I just need software that works when I need it to.

Yep...it’s a great idea but waaaaaay too buggy. And yeah...unprofessional.

I’m heading back to PDF proofing.

    Bummer.

This is pretty serious. My clients cant see the stuff I update. I need to delete everything and create a new link each proofing round.

I used the same solution as you for my previous magazine version; it’s such an unprofessional way to work. I tried removing all the links in my file, but the problem persists. I’m starting to wonder if it’s because my file isn’t stored locally on my machine but directly on my GSuite instead. Do you work that way too? I’m waiting to hear back from the Adobe support guy to see if they have a miracle fix for me.

Do you have any pasted graphics in your document by any chance? As opposed to linked graphics (placed files)? I recall that a user reported recently that pasted graphics caused the ‘artifact’ issue. Once they linked them, the problem went away.

    Hi @theblackfox156,

Sorry to hear you’re running into this again. Could you please confirm the exact version of InDesign you’re using, along with your operating system details?

Also, is this happening only with this particular document, or does the ‘Error Updating Artifact’ appear with all files when trying to update Share for Review?

In the meantime, please try the troubleshooting steps mentioned in this article and let me know how it goes: https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/kb/resolve-share-for-review.html

Once you’ve tried those steps, please share the outcome and I’ll be happy to take this further.

    Hello!

Thank you for your feedback and support.

I am using Tahoe version 26.1 and InDesign version 21.2. This is the second time this has happened with a specific magazine project for this client, but it doesn't occur with my other InDesign files. I suspect there might be some corruption or perhaps something in my workflow is causing an issue. I created .png files for all the images received from the client and exported my illustrations as .eps instead of using Cmd+C / Cmd+V, as someone here had suggested.

I followed the steps you proposed, but unfortunately, it’s still not working. However, I couldn't find the CEP folder. Is that normal?

I'm feeling really discouraged by this situation :(

    Thank you in advance.

@theblackfox156 and exported my illustrations as .eps

This might not be related to the ‘artifact’ issue, but .eps by now is an obsolete format. Are you exporting EPS from Illustrator? You should just place native .ai files instead.
