InDesign shows a blank screen on launch on Windows 10

I installed InDesign to do the 7 day trial to try out the program, but when I launch InDesign CC 2019 (version 14.0.1), I receive a blank dialog box that repeatedly pops up. Then InDesign crashes when I try to close the blank dialog box. Is there a fix for this issue? Any help is appreciated.

You may have had a bad install of the program. Try uninstalling and reinstalling in the following manner:

In the app section of your Creative Cloud desktop app click on the “V” next to the app’s (InDesign) name and choose the “Uninstall” option from the pull-down menu that appears. After you’ve run the uninstall then use the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool Use the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems  to solve installation problems . Then reinstall the program through the Desktop app. Before you reinstall, trash all preference files (see instructions below) to make sure that your install is completely clean. Then launch InDesign and see if the problem persists.

To trash preferences on a PC:

You can try the quick way of resetting on a PC which is to hold down Ctrl + Alt + Shift when launching InDesign and respond affirmatively when asked if you want to reset. There have been some recent reports that the window asking if you want to reset is not popping up but that the prefs are being reset anyway. If this works great but if it doesn’t you may have to manually delete them.

To do so:

On Windows 7 and above the preference files are hidden. To find them go to the Control Panel and open Folder Options and then click the View tab. Then select “Show hidden files and folders” or “Show hidden files, folders or drive options” in Advanced Settings. Then delete (or rename) the folder at the end of this path: C:\Users\<USER>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\InDesign\<Version #>\<Language>. Make sure that InDesign is closed when you do this. When you relaunch the program it will create  new preference files and the program will be at its default settings.

The advantage of manually deleting preference files is that after you’ve reset up the program (make sure that no document window is open) to your liking, you can create copies of your personalized “mint” preference files (make sure that you quit the program before copying them—that finalizes your customization) and use them in the future to replace any corrupt versions you may need to delete.

What version of InDesign? What build of Windows 10? What are you system specs for RAM and processor?

I have licensed the Adobe Creative Cloud last week and installed InDesign 2020 version 15.0.1 for the first time.

Unfortunately it crashes directly on startup - see crash report below. Photoshop is startint without any Problems.

I have local Admin User priviledges.

We made sure the driver for the graphic card is up to date, and ensured the latest Windows updates are installed successfully.

My colleague from our IT has tried to start InDesign under his user on the same Laptop and it worked.

How can we make it work for me?

He found out, that some users have solved this with a new User but that this only worked for 2 weeks or so!?

I also tryed to install the fix mentioned in the post https://community.adobe.com/t5/indesign/indesign-cc-2020-crashes-on-launch-on-windows-mac/m-p/10719113#M159519 but it's not working for me as it is for 15.0 and not 15.0.1 .

Machine Details:

Acer Swift 3

Windows 10

8GB RAM

Intel(R) UHD Graphics 620

i5-8250U CPU 1,60 GHz

First: please do not post full crash reports here. Put them on pastepbin.com and provide a link.

That is an underpowered machine to begin with. The recommended RAM is 16GB, the processor is mid-range and you don't have dedicated graphics. That said, if it's working in a new user account, I think you already have your answer.

It's not all that out of the question to have a corrupt user account. Try uninstalling / reinstalling and/or resetting preferences. If that doesn't work to fix this, you might want to start digging deeper into the user account itself.

What operating system are you using? Has InDesign been installed on your computer before?
