Indesign: Some links to anchors are working, others appear hot in the PDF but don't link

It’s a 250-page document in InDesign 21.1 on Tahoe 26. on MacBook Pro. I’ve placed 150 or more links. Some link to anchors, some do not. I removed underlines manually but experimented on the same page without doing that, same problem. I created an IDML file. Same problem. What I don’t undestand is the inconsistency.

It’s possible that it fails to work within paragraphs that have styles attached to them.

I’m lost. Gonna reboot my machine now.

    Hi David,

InDesign works the best when you use paragraph styles for paragraphs of text, and use character styles for the exceptions to the paragraph style text; for example when applying italics or underlining to a character or a few words.

If you are making links (hyperlinks? cross-references? you need to be more specific) you should also be allowing the character style named Hyperlinks to define the look of the link. Edit the character style Hyperlink just once, and it will apply everywhere all at once.

In a long document, don’t do anything manually. Apply styles consistently, and when a change is needed, edit the style to update everywhere all at once.

If you had text that contained anchors and hyperlinks, but then copy n pasted that text frame into another InDesign document, that often wrecks the links, and they fail to work.

Are you aware that the ToC generator feature can yield a Table of Contents where the page numbers are already hyperlinked?

Also, could you define where you see the hyperlinks failing? Are you testing from an exported PDF? What are your PDF export settings?

Unrelated, but consider updating to 21.5.1 (the current version of InDesign)

I’ve checked many other files. Everything is operating as it should. I inherited the file that is giving me trouble. I’m guessing there may be a setting or two (that I can’t identify) that need to change but I haven’t a clue where to begin.
