InDesign Start view blocks view of other apps

I work with multiple windows open at the same time (Finder, Word etc) and need to see them when my InDesign document is open. How do I turn of the background? 

When I change between apps the backgrund is still there, blocking my desktop, even when I don't have an InDesign-document open.
