InDesign stuck at "checking" state

I am also having this same issue. I just updated and it did not fix the issue. Turning off preflight also didn’t fix it. This happens any time I add a photo into the document. As the first person noted, I end up having to force quit to get InDesign to close. When I re-open it has usually added the photo and has no issues until I try to add another photo.

Thanks for reaching out, and I’m sorry you're experiencing this issue.

Could you please confirm the exact InDesign version you're currently using? If you're not already on the latest InDesign 21.5.1, please update through the Creative Cloud desktop app and test again.

If the issue persists on 21.5.1, go to Preferences > Generative AI, disable the Generative AI options, restart InDesign, and check whether the "Checking" behavior returns.

If you're still seeing the issue, please test InDesign in Windows Safe Mode to help isolate any third-party software or background-process interference:

I forgot to mention, that the “undo” command also doesn’t work. I don’t know if this has to do anything with the other issue, but they appeared at the same time

Can you please elaborate: where do you see the “checking” state? Are there any processes in the Background Tasks panel?

Also, what are your versions of InDesign and Windows?
 

Can you post a screenshot that shows the cursor state?
