Question

InDesign taking al long time to open

For quite some time now my InDesign has been taking a long time to open. I think it started doing this a couple updates ago. I have been dealing with it, but now it has become annoying.

When I open InDesign, it takes over 30 seconds to open.
In the past it opened in less than 10 seconds.
What has changed is causing this issue.

I am running Windows 11 Pro.
I have an I9 processor with 24 cores.
With 64 GB of memory.
The hard drive is 2 TB and I am using about ¼ of that, so there is plenty of space.

What can I do to get this to open quickly, like it used to?

Hi @Attroll,

Thanks for reaching out and sharing the details. Could you please confirm the exact version of InDesign you're using? Also, let me know if the slowness occurs only during launch or continues while working in the app as well. Try launching InDesign in Safe Mode to check if the delay is being caused by any third-party plugins or background software. Ref: https://adobe.ly/47z1mti.

If it opens faster in Safe Mode, it’s likely related to a plugin or external application. You can also try the troubleshooting steps mentioned here: https://adobe.ly/4nzjQQh and let me know if it helps.

Looking forward to your update.
Abhishek

I just upgraded to InDesign 20.5.1 and it is still loading very slow.
The slowness is only at the launch. It does not seem to have any issues after it is loaded.
It loads the splash screen and then the big lag time is after the splash screen goes away and before the recent files screen comes up.
I have noticed that if I close InDesign and open it back up, I don’t get the big delay. I still get a delay but it is not the big long delay.

The only other software running on this computer is Microsoft 365, Adobe InDesign, InCopy, Photoshop, Illistrator, RootsMagic 11, an FTP program, and Microsoft Edge. I don’t have any third party addons.

I was wondering if there was a cache file that I can clear in InDesign that could cure this?

Hello @Attroll,

Thanks for confirming. Could you check for any pending OS updates and install them to see if it helps? Also, try updating to the latest release of InDesign v21 and running InDesign under a different administrator account (Windows) and after rebooting your computer in Safe Mode (Windows) and share your observations.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
