InDesign Text Anchor hyperlinks not working in exported Epub

Hi Indesign Experts!

I have a .indb book with some documents and hyperlinks in some words (links to anchored text) to move between documents. In the interactive/hyperlinks window I can go to the destination of these links without problem. But when I export to Epub some links do not work. What do you think could be happening?

Correct answer James Gifford—NitroPress

Export to EPUB from INDB multiplies several common problems with hyperlinks. The first solution is not to use a Book structure, but put all source content in one INDD file. (The reasons for using Book structure are almost entirely related to print output anyway; EPUB export gains nothing from the separated files.

Beyond that, it's a matter of having meticulous component files in a fully updated and synchronized Book, and then checking and fixing each cross-chapter link one at a time without making ANY other edits or changes. Yep, it's a PITA.

If the files have been edited a lot (many sessions of edit-and-save), you can improve the odds by purging each INDD file (save to IDML, then open and save under a new name as INDD), then creating a new Book to hold them, and then testing and fixing the links. Files bloaded with undo info and other junk often fail to export correctly even when you can't find a specific problem.

I've had similiar issues and found I had to have my Anchors outside another hyperlink. Recently seeing Anchors even next to another hyperlink doesn't work (it doesn't export the Anchor in the PDF document, so it can't go there.)

In addition to James' excellent response, have you tried multiple EPUB readers?

I'm not sure this is one of the flaws that might be reader-dependent. A link is a link,  pretty much; I can't recall a case where one reader could process one and another wouldn't. It's a 'generation after editing/changes' issue, I think.

Agreed, but I file this under "ya never know."

Muchas gracias James!

Espero tener buenas noticias pronto.

Muchísimas gracias James.
