Indesign text boxes keep shifting the text down when resizing box

So not sure if its just me - or I going slowing mad with this, but following the latest update 25.5.1 when I open pre update files and resize a text box all the text shifts down. This happens in both EN and FR docs that I’m using. I’m trying to edit a catalogue with multiple SKUs and text boxes in both languages where everything was lined up and now following text edits its not. Have the adobe gremlins been at work again?

Ok - so I have an interesting update for you all - was onsite with client yesterday (hence radio silence) and raised the question like you do when we are all face to face and skill sharing. I ran a test on their MacBook Pro’s M1 that I was using and the issue didn’t seem to appear - unfortunately an expensive / extreme solution to the issue which is sadly out of my budget at the moment

Right the different font version problem could happen with Open Sans, which is a Google font. Google now offers a free variable type version, but there is also an older .ttf version—Find/Replace Font lists it as Version 1.10, Adobe’s version is 3.003. I’m guessing your client has the Google version installed in their system:

If you need to stay with the Adobe version of the Google font, the simplest solution might be to set all your document’s Text Frame Options First Baseline Offset to Cap Height. If you are not using Object Styles and there are a lot of text frames it could be scripted—see attached:

thank you Rob, certainly looked like it was the answer to a lot of pain, unfortunately having looked at the font information dialog box to try and resolve this, I have a curve ball for you - mine is saying it is version 1.10. Any advice - thanks in advance

The reason I asked about the font is different versions of same named fonts can have different metrics.

For example Adobe and Google both offer their own versions of Roboto and other fonts, which have different Ascent lines. If your text’s First Baseline Offset is set to Ascent, what you are describing could happen if the font got replaced with a different version with the same name.

Hi @andym92494847 , What font is the text using? Can you share the document?

The font is OpenSan (Adobe version through CC app) which has been used for the past 4+ years on these documents with no previous issues. The issue also occurs if you change the language of the text box to French (which this doc is set-up in - also happens in the English docs)

It’s hard to tell from your description alone. especially as you haven’t said how the frames are being re-sized, but have you checked to be sure that the text isn’t set to align to grid?

The boxes are being resized across the measure by using the transform handles and they are not set-up to align to grid

Thanks for reaching out, and I'm sorry you're experiencing this, especially with an existing catalogue where the text was already carefully aligned.

Could you please select one of the affected text frames and check Object > Text Frame Options? Under General, confirm that Vertical Justification > Align is set to Top and that the Top Inset Spacing hasn't changed. Under Baseline Options, try setting First Baseline > Offset to Ascent and check whether Use Custom Baseline Grid is enabled. Please also check the affected Paragraph Style for Align to Baseline Grid.

If these settings are the same, compare them with a newly created document. You could also export an affected file to IDML, reopen it, save it as a new INDD, and test whether resizing the text frame still causes the text to shift.

Also, you mentioned version 25.5.1, could you please confirm whether you mean InDesign 21.5.1 by checking Help > About InDesign, and let us know your exact OS version as well?

the version is 25.5.1 on MacOS 26.6.1 running on i5 Intel iMac with 40GB of memory and 1tb hard drive.

I have checked all the text box settings and paragraph settings and they are the same as above. They are the same in a new document. When I save the affected file as and Idml and reopen all the text boxes have shifted their contents down.
